Supporting the journey to Sustainability

Modern day focus of global industry is towards Sustainability in its multifaceted appearance. In particular for the Pharma Industry and its supply chain the regulatory requirements are often an additional challenge to push goals into actions.

elmplastic has proven, that a sustainable, medical grade co-pack product can be turned from idea to implementation.

By showcasing the possibilities within the supply chain, we support the Pharma high-level goals of Net-Zero GHG emissions, Green Chemistry and Scope 3 emission level next to many other.

We see this as a value ad to our environment and a fundamental asset to the shareholder value of each company developing stewardship towards a more sustainable future.

The first “bio plastic” pipette

  • Barrel and piston, medical grade plastic, made from 95 % biobased Extrusionstype
  • Plunger, medical grade plastic, made from a 100% bio-based material based on PLA

The complex 3-part pipette is with approx. 98%, made from medical grade bio plastic.

The materials in use are biobased, circular, and provide a  low carbon footprint, saving up to 85% CO2e compared to conventional medical plastics.

At the end of their lifecycle, the compounds do not release any fossil carbon into the atmosphere.

The availability of raw materials enables continuous, stable production and provides a good, sustainable complement to conventional plastics.

Good to know

What means low CO2e emissions?

bioplastics are up to 100% biobased, circular, and their low carbon footprint saves up to 85% CO2e compared to conventional medical plastics.

The used Medical Grade Rigid and soft types have the lowest footprint in CO2e emissions.

Additional savings can be realized through lower processing temperatures, with approx. 30°C and materials savings thanks to increased stiffness depending on the grade.
This allows improved product designs for new developments with reduced wall thickness and hence less material

What are medical grade plastics?

Medical Grade Plastics (MGP) are polymeric plastics and masterbatches, blends, compounds which are used to produce:

• Medical devices (according to MDR – Regulation (EU) 2017/745)
• In vitro diagnostics (according to IVDR – Regulation (EU) 2017/746)
• Primary packaging (according to the guidelines of the European Medicines Agency (EMA), Committee for Medicinal Products for Human Use (CHMP) and Committee for Medicinal Products for Veterinary Use (CVMP))

Is Plastic with a bio source also bio degradeable?

Bioplastics can have a biobased content, be biodegradable or biocompatible.

Plastic is a mixture of different materials that produce a moldable solid. When decomposition occurs through biological activity, a material may call itself biodegradable. If enough oxygen is available for the microbes, fully biodegradable materials leave behind nothing but CO2, water, minerals and biomass. Above all, no microplastic particles!

Is bio plastic competing to food?

Med Bio Plastic is a lot – but no competition to food! Currently less than 0,01% of agricultural land is used for bioplastics. In a circular economy, all plastics can be replaced on 2.8% of arable land or 0.31% of total land area.

Sustainability key facts in a nutshell

01

Biobased, recyclable and biodegradable

The future of sustainability lies in materials that give back to the planet, not take from it. Biobased products reduce reliance on fossil fuels, recyclable solutions keep waste out of landfills, and biodegradable innovations ensure nature can reclaim what we use.

02

Energy efficient processing

From optimized manufacturing to renewable-powered operations, energy-efficient processing slashes costs, reduces emissions, and future-proofs industries.

03

Ready for a circular economy

The circular economy turns trash into treasure by designing out waste, keeping materials in use, and regenerating natural systems.

04

Less material needed due to high strength and stiffness

Advanced materials deliver unmatched durability while using fewer resources.
Less material = less waste, lower emissions, and lighter products.

05

No competition to food production

Currently less than 0,01% of agricultural land is used for bioplastics.
In a circular economy, all plastics can be replaced on 2.8% of arable land or 0.31% of total land area.

06

Lower carbon footprint than fossil plastics with similar properties

Our sustainable materials match fossil-based products, but with a fraction of the carbon footprint.

07

Human rights are respected throughout the whole supply chain

A responsible supply chain ensures fair wages, safe conditions, and dignity for every worker, from raw materials to final product.

08

No deforestation for plantations

By choosing zero-deforestation sourcing, we protect biodiversity, communities, and our climate.

Partnership is about joining forces to create something remarkable, combining expertise and resources to deliver excellence for our future.
